what the fellowship has been like
before ai4all, most of my experience with machine learning came from personal projects and research. the fellowship gave me the chance to explore a much broader side of ai, from responsible ai practices and model development to thinking about how these systems affect the people who use them.
i’ve been working with real-world datasets, building machine learning models, and learning how to approach problems where there isn’t always a single correct answer. just as importantly, we’ve spent time discussing fairness, bias, transparency, and how to design ai systems that people can actually trust.
one thing i’ve enjoyed the most is learning from mentors and other students who all come from different backgrounds but share the same curiosity about ai. every project has been a chance to experiment with new tools, ask questions, and see how different people approach the same problem.
the fellowship has also pushed me to think beyond building accurate models. a good model isn’t always a useful one, and a useful one isn’t always a responsible one. learning to balance those tradeoffs has probably been the biggest takeaway for me so far.
