Memento Mori

Ivan Bunin’s “The Gentleman from San Francisco” made me think about a life organized around wealth, status, and the expectation that there will always be more time. I placed the story’s title on a tombstone and surrounded it with collapsing skyscrapers, turning the structures of ambition into something visibly unstable.

Moss and lichen spread across the stone, continuing their slow growth as the city breaks apart. I was interested in that difference in scale: the things people build to appear permanent, and the small forms of life that quietly outlast them. “Memento mori,” a reminder that we will die, gives the painting its central question. If the things we spend our lives accumulating cannot remain ours, what deserves our time while we still have it?
