The northern lights are the kind of sight people wait years to see. In this painting, they fill the sky above a city, while the girl in the foreground looks down at her phone. The people behind her have stopped to watch; her attention is held somewhere outside the scene.
I wanted to explore how easily a screen can occupy us, even when something extraordinary is happening nearby. The girl is already standing in the right place, but her attention keeps her from experiencing it. I used coordinated colors and a triangular composition to connect her to the sky, making them part of the same visual movement even as she remains unaware of it. The painting asks how much of a moment we can miss while believing we are still there.
